About Wangi Wangi Point Holiday Park

Tucked away on the beautiful Lake Macquarie just a 90 minute drive north of Sydney, Wangi Wangi Holiday Park is the ultimate campsite retreat for anyone looking to escape the busy city life.

The name “Wangi Wangi” originates from the Awabakal Aboriginals people. The repetition of “wangi” means “many”, leading to interpretations like “a lot of water”, “many night owls” or “place of many dark green trees”. (Aussie Towns 2024) Whatever its meaning, the name beautifully reflects the richness of the area’s natural environment and cultural heritage.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a week-long retreat, this spot has something for everyone. Let’s dive into some of the top activities that will make your visit to Wangi Wangi Holiday Park unforgettable!

Wangi Wangi is easily accessible, whether you’re traveling by car, bike, bus, or even on foot! Located just a 90-minute drive from Sydney and only 30 minutes from Newcastle, it’s ideal for both day trips and extended stays.

    • By Car: The drive offers scenic views and straightforward navigation via the Pacific Motorway.
    • By Bus: The Wangi Holiday Park bus operates once a day at 15:05, making it a convenient option for those relying on public transport. (For route details, check out the Moovit app.)

    1. Lakeside Macquarie Lake Picnic

The Wangi Wangi Holiday Park comes equiped with an indoor kitchen area, surrounded by large glass windows offering views of the campsite. You’ll find two gas powered barbecues, a small oven, two stove tops, a kettle, and two fridges – perfect for cooking up anything from simple snacks to full meals.

    Meals we’ve cooked here:

    • fajitas
    • sausages
    • avocado on toast

Short gaps in between the tree line allow you to walk down to the edge of the lake to enjoy a waterfront picnic, or alternatively use one of the many benches located around the campsite. Perfect for a family lunch or romantic sunset meal.

    2. Watch the Sunset over Lake Macquarie

A highlight of my trip to Wangi Wangi Holiday Park was watching the sunset with my friends by the lake. Either a 10 minute walk or 2 minute car trip to the start of the Wangi Wangi Circuit Track allows you access to a secluded beach that has serene views of the lake. We got there 30 minutes early to ensure we were able to capture the whole experience and spent the extra time exploring around the edge of Lake Macquarie.

The gentle sounds of the water and watching the sky transform into oranges, pinks, and purples is a truly magical experience. If you watch closely, you’ll also notice fish jumping out of the lake.

Bring your picnic matt and dinner to relax and eat while you watch the sunset.

    3. Watch the Sunrise over Lake Macquarie

Prefer early mornings? The campsite provides stunning views of the sun rising over Lake Macquarie.

For an extra treat, grab your morning coffee from the Wangi Wangi Bakehouse and settle in to watch the lake glow in the morning. Whether you choose a bench near the lake or spread out a picnic mat by the water’s edge, the serene morning atmosphere is hard to beat.

The sunrise at Wangi Wangi is a perfect moment of stillness before diving into the day’s adventures.

    4. Kayaking + Stand Up Paddleboarding on Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie’s calm, expansive waters are ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Bring your own gear and spend hours exploring the lake or simply floating while soaking up the sunshine.

    5. Fishing on Lake Macquarie

Fishing is one of the top activities at Wangi Wangi Holiday Park. Lake Macquarie is teeming with bream, flathead, and bluefish making it the perfect location for fishers of all skill levels. If you go down to the rocks on the edge of the lake, you’ll recognise people from all over the campsite sitting there with their fishing rods hoping to bring in dinner.

    💡TIP
Purchase bait from outside of the holiday park. We had little success with the squid from the park office.

    6. Explore the Wangi Wangi Circuit Track

Wangi Wangi Holiday Park has a beautiful circuit track which takes you wandering through the unique Australian bushland. The walk has beautiful views of the lake as well as a small beach halfway through where you can stop for a swim, kayak, or more fishing! This is also a beautiful location for photographs.

This walk is perfect for families and nature lovers, as a mostly flat track it’s suitable for all skill levels.

    7. Sailing on Lake Macquarie

Sailing is also a very popular activity for those in Wangi Wangi! You’ll always see people down by the caravan park dock setting up their sails and getting ready for a day out on the water,

    8. Grab a Pie From The Wangi Wangi Bakehouse

No Wangi Wangi trip is complete without visiting the Wangi Wangi Bakehouse. It’s the go to place for coffee, bread, and pies. They have a large variety of delicious pies, with my personal favourite being the tomato, onion, and steak pie. Whether you’re looking for breakfast and a coffee or a delicious lunch, the Bakehouse has got you covered.

They also have the most delicious freshly baked sourdough bread that’s made in house each morning. (and it’s vegetable oil free if you’re curious 😉)

Grab you food and sit in the cozy wooden outdoor seating. Or, just across the road, you can walk down to the edge of the water and enjoy your meal near the lake.

After a long day of exploring all around Lake Macquarie, the Wangi Hotel is the perfect spot to eat, relax, and play!

Wangi Hotel has a large variety of menu options, each of them just as delicious as the one before. Their menu is packed with crowd-pleasers like perfectly cooked steaks and tender and well-seasoned salt-and-pepper squid.

They have 2 pool tables perfect for a few games with your friends after a long day of adventure. The relaxed, friendly atmosphere is great for unwinding and enjoying a casual night out.
